The next few blogs will highlight wildlife seen on La Punta and Palace by the Sea – Whales, Birds and more.
2 brief whale encounters are presented in this short video.
The first while swimming at La Punta private beach –
While swimming at the beach I was joined by 2 whales on the far side of the bay.
The second while having breakfast on the pool deck – 2 (possibly more) whales swam by.
Whales are a bit difficult to photograph if they happen to catch one by surprise, but you can see them well enough here.
Everywhere one looks is breath-taking beauty and peace
One comment we regularly hear from guests – The Palace is even more beautiful than it’s pictures. Part of that is the feeling of actually standing on the pool deck and seeing nothing in front of you but ocean and the 2 bays (Manazanillo and Santiago). The gentle yet powerful sound of the surf, the feeling of the sun, fresh air, captivating and evolving light on the sea. Birds (occasional whales) and more.
Through photos, stories and movies, our blog offers views into some additional highlights of Palace by the Sea, La Punta and the surrounding areas. Adding a new way to view the Palace on screen, here are a few recent Panoramas. Enjoy.

Interview with Joaquin Torres, the preeminent architect of Palace by the Sea and La Punta/Santiago Peninsula.
(portrait photos by Dale Fazendin).
Joaquin Torres Zapiain, as an architect fully identified with the peninsula, shows us one of his beautiful masterpieces – Palace by the Sea, and shares his impressions with us.
“When an architect is asked to talk about his work, many experiences come to mind. Working here in Manzanillo as an architect and builder has given me great satisfaction that fills me with pride. The surrealistic surroundings where I have worked these past years – the Peninsula of Santiago – is one of the most beautiful places in Mexico.
This for me, is a constant fountain of motivation for the development of my profession and I feel truly fortunate to be here.
Every project is a catharsis; one empties into it all the emotions, deepest feelings and an immeasurable passion.
I don’t think I am tied to any specific and established style and yet I have great respect for the great architects and their work.
I believe my help resides in creating a space where the user finds himself and tunes into nature and his own essence. This is a fundamental part of my task as an architect.

It’s so hard to come back to reality after an amazing week at the Palace by the Sea.
For Christmas, my husband and I took our family of three children and five grandchildren (and one on the way) to the palace for a week. It was the best present we ever gave to our family, and the best they ever received. Presents are forgotten but memories remain. ThePalace is more than the pictures show, I know that’s hard to believe because we dreamed over the pictures and video of the palace for months before we left.
Upon arrival in Manzanillo airport, we were transferred to the Palace by a great group (HARO) and received a very warm welcome from all the staff with the best margaritas we ever had. The Palace staff is amazing, they are the most wonderfully warm and talented people. They could anticipate every want or need and would bend over backwards to assist in any way they could. Truly amazing people and amazing food. The meals were an event themselves. The best food we had in Manzanillo was at the Palace!
The beach at La Punta was awesome, our group rented jet skiis through HARO that were brought to the beach, so convenient. Because there was so much to do and see and our group would want to go in different directions, we also had HARO assist with additional transportation (Luis was our go-to travel guide, he did an excellent job).
We want to thank the Alpers for sharing their home with us, allowing us to build great memories of a wonderful time.

This week brought an additional point of interest to Palace by the Sea, as Barry Diller’s EOS the world’s largest sailing yacht is moored right in front of La Punta private beach, providing a spectacular view of this magnificent vessel. Here are some photos we took and a brief description from wiki:
The Eos is a three-masted Bermuda rigged schooner. The ship is one of the largest private sailing yachts in the world, and as of 2009 was owned by movie and media billionaire Barry Diller, husband of fashion designer Diane von Fürstenberg. According to a 2007 article in Harper’s Bazaar, Eos features a figurehead of von Fürstenberg sculpted by Anh Duong. Its overall length measures approximately 305 feet (92.92m).
Eos was launched in Bremen, Germany from the Lürssen yard in 2006. The ship took three years to build. When launched, she “knocked Athena off the number one spot [for largest sailing yacht].” Bill Langan was the designer, Rondal/Huisman supplied the rig, and the remaining naval architecture was completed by Lürssen. The interior was designed by François Catroux. The 200 feet (61 m) tall masts are “the maximum height allowed to enable the craft to pass underneath bridges cross the globe.”
Latitude 38 describes Eos’ owner, Barry Diller, creator of Fox Broadcasting Company, as “currently the Chairman of Expedia and the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of IAC/InterActiveCorp … parent of companies including Home Shopping Network, Ticketmaster, Match.com and others,” noting that “In 2005, Diller received $295 million in compensation, the highest of any executive in the United States.”
Mexico is safer than most vacation destinations.
Safety in Mexico ranks far above many popular vacation destinations. Places we think of as idyllic Caribbean retreats have double, triple, even quadruple the murder rates of Mexico. Mexico’s famous vacation areas are even safer than the averaged statistics, and even safer still for tourists. The States where cartel violence has been focused do NOT include Colima. Colima is considered safe within tourist areas.
While the media often portrays Mexico as the most dangerous place on earth, it is statistically quite safe. According to NationMaster.com which uses U.N.-based data, Mexico doesn’t even make the list of the 36 nations with the highest murder rates. Mild-mannered nations like Sweden and Switzerland top Mexico for murders on NationMaster.com. The assault rate in the U.S. is nearly 5 times greater than that of Mexico in the independent Prominix report adjusted for under-reported crime.
Mexico is safer than many cities in the U.S.
Mexico is safer than other popular destinations.
Mexico, one of the world’s great travel destinations, is often singled out for violent crime without telling the whole story. While there is sporadic violence along parts of the U.S. border, the majority of Mexico’s key tourism areas are not only safe, but safer than many other popular tourism areas.
More than 150,000 Americans safely visit Mexico every day. And while the media sensationalizes stories of violence in Mexico, Mexico is safer than many major U.S. cities. Travelers feel relatively safe visiting popular U.S. cities like Miami, Philadelphia, Chicago, New Orleans, Washington D.C, or Atlanta. Visitors from around the world enjoy these vibrant cities in relative, reasonable safety. Yet each of these cities is statistically less safe than Mexico.
Palace by the Sea is located in a gated peninsula with 24 hour guards. Tourist and Beach areas have very low crime and homicide rates. La Punta community is a very peaceful secure vacation destination. And beautiful!
La Punta Peninsula stretches between Santiago and Manzanillo Bays out into the Pacific Ocean.

Here are a few choice photos and comments from another very happy recent guest to Palace by the Sea –
We had a fabulous time at your home in Manzanillo. It was heaven! your staff is truly amazing.
Pillar is the best cook, we enjoyed her meals immensely. She has a true love for cooking and it was displayed all day, everday. God Bless her!!! I loved seeing Patti and Cecila again after 12 years. They both did outstanding work and attended to our every need. Cecilia worked the entire week, everyday all day for us. We couldn’t get enough of her massages. Jose and Pati were darling and constantly did everything possible to make our stay great. Jose and Albie drovethe men to Tamarsndo twice and helped them with golf, set us up on horseback and ATV…and of course JP checked on us everyday and made sure we were enjoying our wonderful stay.
